Featured Artist Special ~ Meet Elsa L'Abbe

I finally found some time to do a feature on one of my favorite artisans.  Fellow Canadian Elsa L'Abbe's specialty is little baby shoes (she also crochets too!).  Now we all remember how our parents/grandparents would bronze the first pair of shoes their children wore. It was cute and dandy, but Elsa takes it to the next level.  Instead of bronzing, she uses paint, glitter, ribbons and transforms those little shoes to something unique, adorable and be proud of.

But enough of me chatting, here's the interview:

How and when did you start your business?
I started selling my "treasures" about a year ago, as I was so in love with what I do, I was constantly at it.  Of course, after a while, I had so much, selling was the next logical thing to do.

Do you remember the first item you ever made?
The very first item I ever made was a pair of old skates that I had painted and glittered and added some old socks.  I gave them as a gift, and the rest is history, like they say, a monster was created.  The monster was me.

Every Artist has a personal "creative process", can you explain yours?
I work a lot of "old" items, shoes, boots, skates, etc, and also new.  I often can tell immediately what I want to do when I see that special pair of old baby shoes, or a certain color of wool.  It is exciting and sometimes I even wake up at 4: 00 AM to work on my latest project.
When people start doing their art/craft, they tend to try a lot of different things before settling down to something that resonates with them.  How has your art/craft changed since you began?
Unfortunately, I jump from one thing to another, decorating baby shoes, painting skates, creating unique items, knitting, crocheting. etc.  There is such a variety of items in my studio, but it's so much fun, as I never know what my next project will be.
How many hours a week do you spend in the creative side versus the business side?
I spend most of my time creating, and a little on business, like listing, etc.  I don't really like the business side, as I am more an artist than a business woman.

What inspires you creatively?
I am inspired a lot by the look in people's eyes when they see my creations, and the joy they express when buying unusual items.  It's wonderful to use up old items too, like baby shoes, boots, skates, etc, instead of always buying new, helps with our mission of saving our wonderful planet.  But it's fun too to also work sometimes with new things like wool, and new shoes which I paint and can be worn.

Where do you sell your art/craft?
I sell a lot to people who have already purchased from me at shows, and are repeat customers.  Also on internet sites, like ArtFire and Etsy, and from my own website.

Can you tell us about some important goals you have achieved with your work?
My goal was to gain confidence in myself and my talent by creating beautiful things that others would actually want to buy.  I feel that I am more than a wife and mom, that I can actually work hard at something that I love to do, and feel passionate about.  Something to lose myself in, it's so wonderful to have a passion.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in or starting out a business relating to their art/craft?
If you feel you want to start a business, first you must have confidence in yourself that you are offering something others want and will enjoy. Decide how to promote, either internet, shows, etc  There are many ways like Etsy, Artfire, your own website, to promote your work.

Who are some of your favorite Artists and Crafters?
I have so many of them, I really like a lot someone who uses old items to make new creations.  I love so many handmade items, and really respect artists as I know how hard they work and how passionate they are about their work.

What do you like to do in your spare time other than making your art/craft?
I have so many interests, I am so torn between crafting, painting, crocheting, etc.  I have 2 horses and love to ride.  So much I love to do, so little time.  I wish the days were twice as long as they are, so I could do all I would like to do.

Last thoughts or words of wisdom?
An artist puts a lot of passion in their work. Only another artist can understand the wonderful feeling it gives when we create something, it is very rewarding.  It's a wonderful world we live in, we are blessed with many opportunites.  I thank God for my health, and my abilitity to work hard and enjoy my life to the fullest.

Be sure to check out Elsa's Website, Artfire Studio, Etsy Studio, Facebook Page and be sure to follow her on Twitter!

Stay tuned for more wonderful artisans to be featured soon....

If you would like to participate to be a Featured Artist, please send me an email and I would love to interview you!

Jewelry by Saniki Creations returns to Blogger

After being away for so long dealing with family, a new website, networking like crazy.  I finally have the time to post something in this here blog.

I'm still tweaking things around here to make it easy to move around for everyone, so please bear with me.

I'll be attempting to make posts at least once every week or two weeks and I will love to start promoting my site, my creations and anything handmade.  So be sure to stay tuned to what I have in store!

FACEBOOK PAGE

We originally got rid of our Facebook Page last year and kept the group page..... However, I changed my mind and have a new Facebook Fan Page for everyone to come visit.  As of today, we have 455 wonderful Fans of Jewelry by Saniki Creations.  The group page is still around, but I am slowly weeding that out of the my many networking sites.

Facebook Fan Page Fans will receive exclusive promos and discounts.  We currently have a wonderful Giveaway right now for Fans for two pairs of earrings and a bracelet.  This will consist of three draws... which means three winners.  Drawing will take place once 500 Fans have been reached.  so if you are not a fan yet, you should be.

CREATIONS FOR SALE

Due to a really back corrupt file last week, my main website's shop dissappeared.... Boy was I angry...  I have now set up a new website and will be selling my creations at my Artfire Studio and Etsy Studio.  The main site will have photos of some of my most favorite and searched for Creations with links to the appropriate listing to buy.  Not all my inventory are posted in the Studios so be sure to check back often for new items.

OTHER THINGS YOU MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT WANT TO KNOW

As I previously said, it's been busy.  My three daughters have their birthdays in the months of March and April.  They are turning 10 years, 7 years, and 2 years.  Time sure has flown by and we've been busy around here with work, school, holiday celebrations and sneaking in some Olympic family activities.  Hopefully I will have time to create some new pieces in between the birthday parties, homework, diaper changes......

Where You Can Find My Creations For Sale

Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope you all had a good week and weekend. I've been rather busy promoting my creations again. I decided to not put all my eggs in one basket and have been scouring the internet to see what other sites are out there that I can sell my jewelry.

Besides having my studio in Artfire, I am now listing my creations in a new site called Artistry Arts. They are rather new, my link to my studio there isn't working yet (you can still find me if you click the stores tab), this site is wonderful and the other sellers are just as nice as me.

Right now Artistry Arts has a Seller Membership Promotion:

I took their banner from their site...should of asked first, but I'm sure Sharon (the Owner of Artistry Arts) wouldn't mind....I hope...

This post will be a short one as I need to go and enter more creations into the site. Visit me there, would love to see you.

Artfire Jewelry Design & Jewelry Supply Guild

Having my store based in the Artfire.com site is definately an unique experience. Besides selling and promoting items for potential buyers, different shop owners on this site like to gather around and join, what we call, Guilds. So far I've joined 5 of them. These Guilds are a group of Artisans (sellers) who are of like minds that do the same crafts, have the same goals, make the same type of items or even have a same specific skill. There's even a Guild for people who are moms, have different religious beliefs, live in certain areas, the list goes on.

This is a great way to meet people, get advice, solve problems with marketing/building a business, help each other promote their shop, learn a new skill, or just to chew the fat.

There's one guild that I belong to called "Artfire Jewelry Design & Jewelry Supply Guild". They are have a Guild Promotion right now just in time for Valentines Day. Different sellers who belong to this Guild have banded together to bring some special deals in their own shops.

Here's the link to it http://artfireguildmemberpromotions.ning.com/

I got too busy and was unable to throw in my two cents in. But I took a look at the specials and if I won the lottery, I would be shopping.

Another link that might be of interest is in our Artfire Chatterbox, there you will find other Sellers with promotions going on too.

http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?mop=modload&name=Chatterbox&file=viewtopic&topic=4641&forum=17&start=10

Alternatively you can always search AJDJSS in Artfire and it should bring up a list of different items for sale by the Guild Members.

Until next time...Remember I still have a sale at my shop, Saniki Creations. Buy 1, Get 1 Half Off, Sale Ends February 15th. So Hurry and come visit.

Crochet Anyone?

Has anyone ever tried to crochet? I know how to knit, but I don't crochet and I'm not the best at knitting, but I can follow a pattern, make a pair of baby booties, scarf, hats, legwarmers, blankets....The basic stuff. But to crochet those things were frustrating to me as I just couldn't figure it out, my coordination, I suppose, is not the greatest. It always amazes me how people can take a ball of yarn and a crochet stick (I know that's not the name of it) and create all these wonderful (and useful) things.
A couple of days ago, I was lucky enough to have one of my bracelets (the Seven Hearts Cinnabar) get featured in a blog owned by another Artfire shop seller, Sheila's Crafts. She was looking for shops to feature so I took a chance and told her where my shop was, you can see her blog at http://sheilascrafts4u.blogspot.com/. Of course I needed to know who Sheila was, and see what she made so I took a peek at her store and WOW, she crochets!! You guys should take a look at her shop, she has pot holders, face cloths, coupon holders, and my favorite is the button bracelet. Here's a couple of things in her store right now for sale:

Purple and Green Crocheted Camera Bag

Orange Cell Phone Holder

Crochet Festive Button Bracelet

I usually can look at an item and figure out how something is made and what type of pattern it is to make it. But something about using yarn still confuses me. That's probably why I make jewelry instead.

Be sure to check out Sheila's Crafts, she's a great person and a new friend of mine.

Here's her shop link: http://sheilascrafts.artfire.com/

Until next time, be good, have fun, and check back tomorrow for my newest creation. Here's a sneak peek.

So Many Beads, So Little Time...

Hello, hello, hello....I finally got a little free time to do some work on the computer to promote, promote, promote.
I hope everyone's week is going well so far. From my last post on Sunday, I've been so busy with...driving my girls to and from school, changing baby's diaper, feeding kids, trying to get my 5 year old to eat something different, changing baby's diaper, trying to get baby to stop being such a "Mommy Suck", being a ref to sibling bickering, changing baby's diaper....well you get the picture. I really don't know how some home businesses survive with children running around. And don't tell me to hire a nanny or childcare....I haven't won the lottery yet, so it's not financially possible. So I keep puttering along......I think I want to take a nap for at least a week.
Today my oldest has a friend over for a playdate. Wow, little girls are loud...I started making a necklace, but.......I keep getting interrupted. I thought they were suppose to entertain themselves at this age (8yrs). So the good ol' standby of TV is on with a movie (Hairspray) in the DVD for their viewing pleasure. Thank goodness they haven't started singing are figured out the lack of political correctness from the 50's. (John Travota still looks hot, even as a woman!).
Anyways, I gotta go and make dinner, change a diaper, feed the kids, try to make my 5 year old to try something new, change a diaper....the usual.
If I can remember, I'll try to take a picture of my work in progress for a sneak peek tomorrow.
Later.....

Gung Hay Fat Choi - Chinese New Year - Special Feature

Welcoming the Year of the Ox, I wish all my family, friends and business associates a happy, healthy life, plus years of fortune and luck in all the adventures they will encounter.
THE CALENDAR
The Chinese Calendar began in 2697 BC when the Yellow King became king. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-year cycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

This year is the 4706th Chinese Year beginning from January 26, 2009, the Year of the Bull, Cow or Ox. The Ox is the second sign of the Chinese zodiac. Like its predecessor and complement, the Rat, it signifies new beginnings. The birth year of President Barack Obama (1961) was a Bull Year. The next year is the Year of the Tiger beginning from February 14, 2010.
THE ZODIAC STORY
In the distant past, Time was an illusion and chaos reigned among the animals of the earth. Every creature from the cunning rat to the arrogant tiger proclaimed that he alone was the most virtuous and unique. The Jade Emperor, Lord of Heaven, needed to restore order. He would hold a great race, and the first twelve to cross the finish would be declared the First of the Earthly Creatures. After the dust raised by ten thousand paws, claws and hooves settled, the winners were the rat, the ox, the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the serpent, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig. Each was rewarded with its own year, and these twelve years of the Chinese zodiac cycle are each characterized by the distinctive traits of that year's animal. From these twelve symbols, a person's fortune, character, strengths and weaknesses, as well as the course of his personal and social life may be told.
The stalwart ox was seemingly destined to be the winner of the celestial race, but his perseverance would lose to the craftiness of the rat. (The wily little creature was hiding in the ox's ear and leapt out to cross the finish line ahead of him.) Those born under the sign of the ox are known for their dexterity and driving perfectionism. They are generous and devoted. But as pensive and loving as they may be, they are not likely to forgive and forget when they have been wronged.
WHAT SIGN ARE YOU?
I found a really cool site that can tell you what Chinese Astrological Sign you are, personality profile, element, who you are compatible with and so forth....even if you don't believe in the psychic type things like I am, it's still kinda fun to check out. Here's the link: http://chinese.astrology.com/
EAT AND BE MERRY
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. I remember being afraid of all the drumming that went on during the lion dance. It still sends shivers up and down my spine. But I braved it and got my red envelopes stuffed with money and candy.

For more information on Chinese New Year activities, the food (the best part), and superstitions check out this link: http://www.educ.uvic.ca/faculty/mroth/438/CHINA/chinese_new_year.html

New Items this Weekend

New Items Listed this Weekend
It's almost midnight here and my only time to really do some work. I do my best brainstorming at night with the lights turned off and only the glow of the computer monitor giving me some light. But man am I tired.
I have these cinnabar beads, a whole bunch of them, that I've been staring at for the longest time and finally I made something out of them. However I still got a ton of these. I got "writer's block" on what to do with the rest. Ugh.
Here's a bracelet and necklace that I did up this weekend (in the dark of course). I listed them in my shop. Besides the cinnabar, I've used ab garnet czech glass and rose czech glass beads. It's different, which I like.

Happy Buddha Choker/Necklace - geniune vintage chinese jade buddha pendant, white jade, hematite, green frosted czech glass beads. This item will be listed in my shop on Monday..Here's a sneak peek...

Be sure to check back on Monday, January 26, for a special feature about Chinese New Year. I'll be posting a few items from my friends in other artfire shops that fit the occassion.
